Coastal Studies-Region One Workshop

Went to the UTPA Coastal Studies Laboratory as part of the Region One Science Texas Regional Collaborative. The workshop was led by Bridgette, research assistant at the lab and who is part of the educational outreach programs.
Using concepts from Ocean Literacy and C-MORE, discussed red tide and red tide rangers along with observing samples of red tide. After observing red sample and counting number of plankton encountered, we moved on to observing brine shrimp. Bridgette was nice enough to give us samples that we could use in the classroom.
We then moved on to shark dissection. Bridgette discussed how to go about dissecting the shark and what in particular to look for. She wasn't kidding when she mentioned the liver was very oily!
After dissection, we moved on to look at different samples of echinoderms and mollusks. The teachers had some hands on with starfishes, sea urchins, some crabs and a sea cucumber.
We then headed to the Sea Turtle Inc, a turtle hospital at South Padre Island. Kat gave us some great info on what Sea Turtle Inc. does, besides helping turtles, they also do conservation and education. Discussed five Gulf of Mexico species, Leatherback, Kemp's Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Green, and that they have treated most of them except Leatherback.
We then finished up by going out on the bay on a boat. We were able to look at some live ocean life that Kyle collected and then looked at some dolphins. Great professional development, lots to take back to classroom to discuss with students. :-)

First week with HP Photosmart All-In-One Printers HPInkChallenge

Gotta say that this is first time I really deal with a photo printer and I was most impressed with the quality of the photos. I guess I've mostly stuck to the digital versions these days and didn't see a reason to print them. Also, I was used to simple inkjet printers when printing pictures and you know how good those come out...
Anyways....on to the challenge....
1st assignment: Setting up, refilling and printing
Had problems with the setting up on computer, initially. Software would not completely load and I tried several times. So with the help of HP tech support, I downloaded newest version of install software and worked perfectly. The printer set up itself was extremely easy! Ran everything off the lcd panel. Setup and wireless was done with no problems. The ePrint capability...Awesome! Being able to send an email to your printer with something you want to print...very cool! :-)
Took me a few tries to find a place that could refill the ink cartridges. But with some suggestions from others on Twitter, I ended up at OfficeMax. It took them just 15 minutes for the refill. The cartridges looked OK though was concerned about some ink on the outside and they didn't seem exactly the same. Based on some comments on the community site, I'm wondering if they are my originals....
Once the cartridges were set up on the printers, one with HP ink cartridges and one with refill cartridges, I was ready to do some printing. Right away I noticed streaking on the refill ink printer (right arrows), the alignment page, and differences in color (up arrows). Not good! Expectations immediately drop for the refill ink printer's chances in this challenge.

I also noticed streaking on the wireless report (right arrows).

I finished setting up the printers with the required paper and placed them side by side.

And continued printing the rest of my assignment.

Like I mentioned, I am really impressed with the quality of the photos being printed on both printers. But I have noticed color differences between them. The refill ink printer is printer in different shades of color and somewhat darker. For example, the black and white test photo, it's all black and white on the HP ink printer but some of it looks brown on the refill printer (left arrows)

Looking forward to the rest of the challenge... :-)
